The New Moon: A Quiet Place to Begin Again
In short: The new moon is the darkest point of the lunar cycle, the pause before the light returns. For as long as people have watched the sky, it has been the moment to plant a seed, to set a quiet intention for what you want to grow. Here is how to work with it, gently.
We talk a lot about the full moon, bright and dramatic. The new moon is its opposite, and in some ways the more powerful of the two. It asks nothing of you but stillness. It is a dark, quiet doorway, and doorways are for walking through.
What the new moon is really for
A full moon is for releasing, for letting go of what has grown too full. A new moon is for beginning. In the dark, with nothing yet visible, you plant the seed. You name what you want to call in, before there is any proof it is possible. That is the whole quiet power of it: it is the practice of hope made deliberate.
You do not have to believe the moon controls anything to use it this way. Think of it as a rhythm the whole world already keeps, a built in reminder, every few weeks, to pause and ask yourself: what do I want to begin?
A simple new moon practice
You need almost nothing. On the night of the new moon:
Find a few quiet minutes in low light.
Take three slow breaths and let the day fall away.
Ask yourself one honest question: if I could plant one seed right now, for the season ahead, what would it be?
Do not overthink it. Let the first true thing rise.
Write it down in a single line, present tense, as if it is already taking root.
Keep the paper somewhere you will see it.
You are not demanding anything from the universe. You are telling yourself, clearly, what matters, and that clarity is what starts to move things.
If a sign or a feeling comes to you in the days after, do not dismiss it. I wrote about those gentle nudges in Signs From a Loved One in Spirit; the new moon tends to make them easier to notice.
Begin together, Monday November 9
Monday, November 9 · In person in Virginia Beach · $37
Doing this alone at your window is beautiful. Doing it in a guided group is something else. This Monday, November 9, I am holding a Soul Journey Under the New Moon, a gentle guided journey inward to meet what is ready to begin, and to plant your intention with others holding the same quiet hope. It is held in person, here in Virginia Beach.
See the details and reserve on the November calendar. Arrive with one small seed in mind.
With love,
Nancy
