Signs From a Loved One in Spirit: How They Reach You
In short: The people we love do not simply go silent. They reach for us in small, easy to miss ways: a song at the right moment, a familiar scent, a repeating number, a visit in a dream. Here are the signs people notice most, and how to tell the difference between a message and a coincidence.
This is the season for it. Late October is when the veil feels thinnest, and the ones who have crossed feel closest. If you have been missing someone, you may already be noticing more than usual. It is real, and you are far from the only one feeling it right now.
The ways they tend to reach us, and what to do with each
Spirit rarely arrives with thunder. It is almost always gentle, and it tends to come through the ordinary. These are the signs people describe to me again and again, and what I tell them to do when one arrives, because noticing is only half of it. How you answer matters too.
A song
Their song comes on right when you were thinking of them, in a store, in the car, out of nowhere. Not every time, but at the exact moment you needed it.
What to do: stop and listen to the whole thing if you can. Say, out loud or inside, I hear you. Acknowledging a sign is its own quiet comfort, whatever comes next.
A scent
Their perfume, their cigarettes, bread baking the way it did in their kitchen. A smell with no source in the room, there and then gone.
What to do: do not go hunting for where it came from. Just breathe it in and let the memory it carries rise. The scent is the doorway, the memory is the message.
A number
The same number, their birthday, your anniversary, showing up on clocks and receipts until you finally notice.
What to do: when you catch it, pause and ask yourself what you were just thinking or feeling. The number is often less the message than a tap on the shoulder to pay attention to the thought you were already having.
A visit in a dream
Not a normal dream. These feel vivid and real, and you wake up certain you were actually with them. People often remember these for years.
What to do: write it down the moment you wake, before it fades. The feeling you woke up with, calm, loved, reassured, is usually the real content, more than the details.
A small creature
A cardinal that stays too long, a butterfly that will not leave, a dragonfly that lands on your hand. Different cultures name different messengers, and the point is the same: something paused with you.
What to do: notice whether it came right after you spoke to them, asked them something, or missed them hard. The timing is what turns a bird into a message.
A wave of them, out of nowhere
You are doing dishes and suddenly you feel them, warm and close, for no reason at all.
What to do: this one needs nothing. Do not analyze it. Just let yourself feel accompanied for a moment. That is often the simplest and truest message there is.
How to tell a message from a coincidence
Here is the honest answer. You usually cannot prove it, and you do not need to. The difference is almost never in the sign itself. It is in the timing and the feeling.
A coincidence passes and you forget it. A message stops you. It arrives at the exact moment you were low, or asking, or missing them, and it carries a wave of feeling with it, a knowing that lands in your body before your mind can argue. When you feel that, you do not have to convince yourself. Let it be what it is. Say thank you, and let it land.
A simple test I give people: would it still move you if a stranger explained it away?
If someone said the song was just the radio and you would still quietly know, then it was yours. If the explanation makes the whole thing collapse, it was probably a lovely coincidence, and that is alright too. You are allowed to keep the ones that hold.
If your mind wants more certainty than that, that is alright. This is a body, mind, and spirit way of knowing that has been explored for a long time, including for decades at Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. here in Virginia Beach. If the whole idea is new to you, I wrote about why this is open to everyone in Can Anyone Learn Divination, and about why this season opens the door wider in October: The Month the Veil Grows Thin.
If you are not getting any signs
This is the part people are afraid to say out loud, so let me say it for you. Sometimes you watch and wait and nothing comes, and it breaks your heart a little more. Please hear this: a quiet season is not a closed door, and it is never a measure of how much you were loved.
There are gentle reasons the signs go quiet:
Fresh, heavy grief is loud, and it can drown out something as soft as a sign.
Watching too hard is its own kind of noise, because straining for a message crowds out the stillness a message needs.
Some of us are simply wired to receive through feeling or dreams rather than through objects and birds, so we miss the signs we were told to look for while the real ones arrive another way.
If it has been quiet, try loosening your grip instead of tightening it. Stop auditing every bird and every song for proof. Live your days, and let them find you sideways, when you are laughing, cooking, half asleep. The signs tend to come when you are no longer standing at the door staring through it.
What the signs are not
Two honest cautions, because I love you enough to say them.
First, not everything is a message. If you make every coincidence carry the weight of a visitation, you will exhaust yourself and start to distrust the real ones. Let most things be ordinary so the extraordinary ones can stand out.
Second, signs are a comfort, not a replacement. They sit beside your grief, they do not cancel it, and they are not a substitute for the support of people who love you or, if the weight is too much to carry, a professional who can help you hold it. Connecting with spirit and taking care of your very human heart are meant to happen together.
How to invite them closer this week
You do not need anything elaborate. You need a little quiet and a little willingness. Here is a simple practice you can do tonight.
Pick a time you will not be interrupted, and lower the lights.
Light a candle for them, and if you have a photo or something that was theirs, set it where you can see it.
Say their name out loud. Then tell them, simply and honestly, that you miss them and that you are open. Ask them, if they can, to let you know they are near.
Now the hard part. Stop talking and notice. Spirit speaks in the pause, not over it. Keep your phone down for ten minutes and just sit. Watch what drifts in without reaching for it: a memory, a word, a warmth, a scent, an image behind your eyes. Do not judge whatever comes.
When you are ready, thank them and blow out the candle, and leave the door of your attention open through the week. Signs often arrive a day or two later, once you have stopped straining for them.
And be gentle with yourself. Missing someone is not a problem to fix. It is love with nowhere to land for a moment, and these small signs are a place for it to land.
Sit with me this Friday
If you want to feel this in company rather than alone, come to Spirit Talk Live this Friday. It is free, I go live, I tune in, and I read for whoever shows up. Bring a question on your heart, or simply come and sit in it with the rest of us. Sometimes the message you needed comes through for someone else, and lands squarely in you.
See the details on the October calendar. Just come, exactly as you are tonight.
And if what you are longing for is more personal than a sign, a message meant for you and no one else, that is what a private reading is for. When you feel ready, you can book a session with me. There is no rush. The door stays open.
With love,
Nancy
